The Altar of Magic was a set of magical artifacts used by Rita Repulsa to cast spells over humans and summon monsters.

Rita’s Altar of Magic

When Rita Repulsa decided to use Tommy Oliver as her new Green Ranger, she prepared for a special ceremony in her moon palace. Her balcony was decorated with dozens of red candles, and her telescope was replaced with a small black altar. Upon the altar sat a black statue of a woman holding a crescent moon flanked by burning candles. Nestled in the arm of the statue was a white, humanoid skull. In front of the skull was a clear crystal ball, which was to be used to transform Tommy.

Rita used her wand to summon magical lightning which struck the skull, causing the eye sockets to glow. As the energy built up inside it, the skull projected two beams of rainbow colored light into the crystal ball. Rita then use dher wand to capture Tommy and teleport him inside the crystal ball. Gazing into the crystal ball, Rita could see Tommy laying on a podium surrounded by candles in a smoke-filled room. [MMPR1: “Green With Evil, Part I“]

Summoning monsters with the altar

Rita later used her magical altar to summon Mutitus and Lokar. Reciting an alien spell, the eyes of the skull appeared to flash red as her magic was cast. Speaking to the skull, clouds and red lightning began appearing over Angel Grove. Finishing the spell, Rita used her wand to charge the skull with energy, before a giant-sized Mutitis appeared in the city. [MMPR1: “Island of Illusion, Part I“]

Rita would use the altar to cast spells of illusion over each of the Rangers. Chanting and reciting her spells, she was seen to target Billy and Trini after Kim, Tommy and Zack had overcame their hallucinations. Rita charged the skull with energy to cast a more powerful illusion spell on Jason. [MMPR1: “Island of Illusion, Part II“] A short time after this, Rita used her alter to cast a spell on the Green Candle, allowing it to be used to steal the Green Ranger powers from Tommy. [MMPR1: “The Green Candle, Part I]

The altar on full power

In late 1993, Rita used all of her power to cast a spell using her altar that would activate Goldar’s Zord, Cyclopsus. [MMPR1: “Doomsday, Part I“] A short time later, Rita used the alter to cast a spell on Billy that would cause his fear of fish to become unbearable. [MMPR1: “Something Fishy“] Rita would once again target Billy with her altar soon after this, using it to command Billy’s movements once he was intoxicated with Dramole’s gas.

In early 1994, Rita called on the Ecocyte Pearl to unleash the Oysterizer. The sleeping Oysterizer was summoned to the crystal ball on her alter. As Rita moved to pick up the ball, the Oysterizer was awakened, pledging to bring Rita the Pearls of Stillness. [MMPR1: “An Oyster Stew“]
