A beautiful mind

One night in 1993, Squatt teleported into Billy’s garage laboratory. Squatt approached Billy’s latest invention and swapped two wires on one of the devices units. Squatt intended for the machine to scramble Billy’s brain when he tested it, which would distract the Rangers. With the Rangers busy helping Billy, Rita would be free to attack. The next day, Billy introduced Kimberly to his new project. Billy explained to her that his device would facilitate direct thought transfer, allowing her to read his mind.

Despite still being in the experimental stage, Billy was confident that the machine would work. Wheeling out a large device on a platform, Billy conceded that it might appear slightly imposing. However, Kimberly was impressed.

The machine appeared to be constructed on a wheeled, wooden platform. A large backing board was located in the center of the platform, in which two human shapes of different heights had been cut. The backing board was adorned with a series of wires that snaked around the cutouts, connected in the middle by a device that separates various wires. Towards the front of the platform between the two cutouts was a large plasma ball. Each cutout had a plexiglass visor that slid down over each users face.

Trading places

Kimberly stepped onto the platform and Billy began connecting her to the device. Billy made some final checks then took his place in the machine, holding Kimberly by his right hand and flipping down a micro-generator switch with his left. The machine began to spark and smoke, causing the two teens to shake.

As the device burned out, the two teens stepped out of the device, with each having swapped minds with the other. Billy, now in Kimberly’s body, expressed that the machine experienced a diathermic overload, causing them to undergo spatial personality displacement. Unbeknownst to either, Bulk and Skull had been spying on them as they began the experiment, but had not seen the machine malfunction. Sneaking into the garage, both Bulk and Skull stepped into the machine and repeated the steps Billy had taken. Just like before, the machine switched the minds of Bulk and Skull.

Later, Billy made alterations to the machine that allowed both he and Kimberly to return to their original bodies. Moments later, Bulk and Skull approached Billy and asked to go back to normal, who agreed to help them. Stepping into the machine, Bulk and Skull were returned to their normal bodies. Afterwards, Skull asked Billy if he would consider switching places with him for his upcoming maths test, to which Billy refused. [MMPR1: “Switching Places“]
