The Astro Morpher is an essential device for the Power Rangers In Space team, serving as the primary tool that enables the Rangers to morph into their powerful alter egos. There are five Astro Morphers, one for each member of the team. The Morpher is not just a transformation device; it also serves as a communicator, a summoning tool, and a control interface for various Ranger operations.

Design and Features

The Astro Morpher is a sophisticated device worn on the wrist, resembling a high-tech watch. The device’s lid, which bears a gold rectangle emblem, flips open to reveal a 12-button numeric keypad. This keypad allows the Rangers to input specific codes to access various functions. Below the 7 key, there is a button with a sound icon, and below the 9 key, there is an Enter button.

Morphing Sequence

The primary function of the Astro Morpher is to transform its user into a Power Ranger. The sequence for morphing involves pressing a specific combination of buttons on the keypad:

  • 3-3-5: This is the input code that enables the user to morph into a Power Ranger.

To initiate the morphing sequence, the Ranger holds the Morpher in front of their chest while extending their right arm. They then bring their right hand back to flip open the Morpher’s lid using a red thumb button on the side. Once the lid is open, the Ranger presses the numbers 3, 3, and 5, followed by the Enter button. A digitized voice calls out the numbers, the Morpher’s lights flash, and the morphing sequence begins, transforming the user into their Ranger form.

Additional Functions

The Astro Morpher is not limited to morphing; it has several other critical functions that aid the Rangers in their missions:

  • 2-5-9: This code summons the Ranger’s Galaxy Glider, a personal spacecraft used for rapid travel in space.
  • 7-6-1: This code orders the Megaship to deploy the Mega Tank, a powerful ground vehicle.
  • 1-0-8: This code links the Morpher to D.E.C.A., the onboard artificial intelligence of the Megaship, allowing for communication and control of ship functions.
  • 5-4-1: This code summons the Astro Megazord, a colossal robot formed by combining the Megaship and the Mega Shuttle.

Integration with Megaship Uniforms

When in their Megaship uniforms, the Rangers wear their Astro Morphers in place of traditional communicators. This integration ensures that they always have quick access to their Morphers’ various functions. In civilian clothes, the Morphers can replace communicators between shots, though they are not shown being summoned explicitly.

Practical Applications

The Astro Morphers have practical applications beyond combat. They can be used for teleportation, as seen when T.J. used his Morpher to teleport by touching the 0 key. The Morpher includes an instruction panel listing various codes for different functions, ensuring that the Rangers can quickly access the necessary tools in emergencies.

Communication and Emergency Functions

The Astro Morphers also serve as communication devices, allowing the Rangers to converse with each other and with D.E.C.A. The Morphers have been used to receive messages from the Megaship and to communicate during missions. For example, T.J. spoke hands-free into his Morpher to use it as a communicator, complete with the pre-speak blip sound often heard coming from the communicators. When Alpha called the teens on the planet Kalderon to warn them of volcanic activity, Cassie flipped open her Morpher to listen, but the signal had too much interference, so she shut it again. Andros flipped open his Morpher and tried to call the Megaship for a heading, with no success. The Morphers’ versatility in communication ensures that the Rangers are always connected, even in challenging environments.

Legacy and Power Restoration

The significance of the Astro Morphers extends beyond their immediate use. Upwards of a year after the battle against the forces of evil, Andros returned to the Megaship and found the Morphers still sealed in the Power Vault. Recognizing the continuing need for their power, Andros and the other Rangers reclaimed their Morphers to face new threats.

The Savage Sword Incident

One of the most critical incidents involving the Astro Morphers occurred during the confrontation with Psycho Pink and the Savage Sword. Cassie’s Astro Morpher was severely damaged in this battle. Psycho Pink, wielding the Savage Sword, targeted the Morpher to weaken the Rangers. As the battle raged on, Psycho Pink impaled Cassie’s Morpher with the sword, causing a massive energy disturbance.

The energy from the damaged Morpher created a significant threat, endangering nearby Terra Venture with the disturbance. Cassie, already weakened by the energy drains from the sword, watched as Psycho Pink grew to giant size, fueled by the energy from the broken Morpher. This battle required the combined efforts of both the Galaxy Megazord and the Astro Megazord to counter the giant Psycho Pink.

In a heroic effort, Kendrix, the Pink Galaxy Ranger, intervened. She forced her way into the energy cyclone created by the damaged Morpher and the Savage Sword. Using her Quasar Saber, Kendrix struck the hilt of the Savage Sword, causing a massive explosion. This act not only destroyed the Savage Sword but also dissipated the energy storm, ultimately costing Kendrix her life.
