Power Cannon

The Power Cannon was a large team cannon created by Alpha 5, sometimes used by the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to destroy monsters created by Lord Zedd.

Early cannon

Shortly after Jason, Trini and Zack left to attend the Peace Conference, Alpha began working on a new weapon to aid the Power Rangers.

Created from his workbench in the Command Center under the watchful eyes of Zordon, the Power Cannon appeared to be a large black device, measuring approximately 200 cm from end to end.

One end of the device contained a large aperture from which destructive energy blasts would be emitted. The sides of the device were emblazed with golden trims and stylized lettering. While under construction, Alpha hid it from the Rangers, despite his excitement to unveil it.

When the Rangers went up against Lord Zedd’s Skelerena monster, Zordon instructed Alpha to send them the newly completed weapon.

On the battlefield, the White Ranger instructed his fellow Rangers to prepare to receive the Power Cannon. The Rangers arranged themselves in position, lining up in pairs, braced to share the weight of the large cannon. The White, Pink and Blue Rangers held the right-hand side of the cannon, while the Black, Yellow and Red held the left.

Cannonball run

The cannon was loaded with charges which took the form of colored spheres, each approximately the size of a grapefruit, deposited by each Ranger into a hole in the device. As each charge entered the cannon, both the charge and the chute would glow with the color of each respective Ranger color.

With the ammunition loaded, the Pink, Blue, Yellow and Red Rangers would each fully insert a control rod into the each side of the device. Finally, the Red and Blue Rangers would push a large control circuit into the rear of the device, causing the head of the cannon to flash and glow. As the cannon was fired, a swirl of golden energy would appear at the mouth of the weapon before becoming sucked into the device itself, then quickly expelled along with the destructive rounds.

As the cannon fired, it also delivered a strong recoil which would push all six Rangers back. Five glowing energy orbs would be propelled through the air, before collapsing each other, resulting in a white-hot orb trailed by red plasma. This ordinance was powerful enough to cut straight through the Skelerena monster, resulting in its complete destruction. [MMPR2: “Mirror of Regret“]  

Loose cannon

When Lord Zedd used the Rock of Time to turn back time on Earth, the Blue Ranger observed that they would need to use the Power Cannon to destroy it. The power of the cannon caused the Rock of Time to explode in a massive fireball, restoring the Rangers to their proper time. [MMPR2: “Rangers Back in Time, Part II“]

The Power Cannon could be used by as few as three Rangers at a time, as demonstrated against the Turkeyjerk monster. The Blue, Yellow and Black Rangers were able to summon and use the cannon alone.

During this battle, the Rangers were not observed inserting their charges or control rods, and the destructing blast emitted was a single golden blast rather than the standard multicolored orbs usually fired. [MMPR2: “Storybook Rangers, Part II“]
