The talking tiger saber

When Zordon and Alpha created the White Ranger powers and bestowed them upon Tommy, Alpha explained that the White Ranger would also carry an enchanted saber known as Saba.

Saba would be able to assist the White Ranger in battle as well as control his White Tiger Thunderzord. To introduce the new weapon, Alpha pressed a series of buttons on a Command Center console and the sword materialised in the hand of the White Ranger.

Saba and the Tigerzord

When Tommy went to battle the giant Nimrod monster, Saba instructed him to activate the Tigerzord. As the Tigerzord appeared, it started running across the landscape until it tripped and fell upside down, to which Tommy questioned Saba’s ability to control the Tigerzord. Leaping on top of the Tigerzord, Tommy apologized to Saba before entering the cockpit.

Once inside, Tommy inserted the blade of Saba into a control column and began the transformation to Warrior Mode. Saba was able to make the Zord mimic the body movements of the White Ranger in battle, moves which Saba found impressive.

Saba could communicate with the other Rangers with a function similar to their own wrist Communicators. However, when first asked to do this, Saba found himself having difficulty in contacting the Red Ranger. [MMPR2: “White Light, Part II“]

The power of Saba

During the battle with the Pursehead monster, the White Ranger became entangled in energy floss, leaving him helpless. Responding to Tommy’s call for help, Saba was able to levitate under his own power and rise into the air. As Saba’s eyes glowed red, beams of  white energy shot out of them and shocked the Pursehead to the ground, releasing the White Ranger.  [MMPR2: “Two for One“]

Even when not on board the Zord, Saba was able to provide the White Ranger with updates on the operational status of the Tigerzord. [MMPR2: “Rocky Just Wants To Have Fun“] Under instruction from Tommy, Saba was able to summon Tor.  [MMPR2: “Scavenger Hunt“]

When Rita placed Tommy and Kimberly under a competitiveness spell that caused them to become fierce rivals, Goldar was able to steal Saba as the two Rangers argued. Saba attempted to resist the theft, demanding to be released. Apparently against his will, Saba was forced by Goldar to fire white energy beams from his eyes against the Rangers.

Retreating the Command Center, the Rangers witnessed that Rita Repulsa had now appeared on Earth with Saba in her possession, Saba’s mouth now gagged with a black ribbon. Billy proposed that they could use a handheld electromagnet that would be strong enough to retrieve Saba from a distance.

As the Rangers demanded his return, Rita released the gag and summoned the Tigerzord to appear. In response, the Rangers summoned their Thunder Megazord. As the Rangers fought the Tigerzord, Tommy was able to use Alpha’s electromagnet device to pull Saba out of Rita’s hand and regain control of the Tigerzord. [MMPR2: “Best Man For The Job“]

Silent partner

Despite the destruction of the Tigerzord, Saba would remain as the White Ranger’s personal sidearm, although rarely being used or speaking. [MMPR3: “Ninja Quest, Part III“] When Tommy faced Lord Zedd in combat, he was able to use Saba to break Zedd’s staff, forcing it transform back into a serpent.  [MMPR3: “Changing of the Zords, Part III“]

The strength of Saba’s blade would again be utilised by Tommy later, when he used Saba to break the Zeo Crystal into its five constituent sub crystals.  The sub crystals were then scattered into random timeholes to hide them. [MMPR3: “Master Vile and the Metallic Armor, Part III“] With the Rangers now using the Power of the Zeo Crystal, their Mighty Morphin suits now adorned the rear wall of the Power Chamber, which featured six display cases.

The display case of the White Ranger included Saba attached to the belt. This was notable as the rest of the Rangers Power Weapons were collected in a central display. However, it is unclear if this was the real Saba or merely a replica. [PRZ: “A Zeo Beginning, Part II“]

Lifesaber

Many years later, Tommy was rendered comatose following the shattering of his Dino Gem. From his hospital bed, he dreamed that he fought his former Ranger forms, including his White Ranger form, who was once again wielding Saba as his weapon. [PRDT: “Fighting Spirit“] Ten years later during Prince Vekar’s invasion of Earth, an unmorphed Tommy was attempting to rescue a young boy from a car which was in the process of falling off of a broken bridge. Tommy was able to summon Saba and used the sword to extend his reach to the child, and he pulled him to safety. [PRSM: “Legendary Battle“]

Five years after the events of Vekar’s invasion, Tommy was shown using his Master Morpher to transform into the White Ranger. As before, the White Ranger was able to use Saba, which was used in battle against the Black Dino Thunder Ranger clone. [PRSNSt: “Dimensions in Danger“]
