Powers and abilities

Prior to the arrival of Rita Repulsa’s father, Master Vile, Zordon and Alpha had been working on a new defence mechanism to protect the Rangers in battle.

Built directly into the suits of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Metallic Armor Defensive Shield tapped directly into the Morphin Grid. Zordon revealed that the new feature was voice activated and could be summoned with the voice command, “Metallic Armor, power up”. Zordon advised the Rangers that the Armor should be called up on in emergency situations as the effects on their powers would be much more dramatic than normal morphing.

Master Vile provided Lord Zedd with a new type of food that enhanced the strength of the Tengas, causing the birds to overwhelm the Rangers. Faced with this new threat, the Rangers activated their Metallic Armor.

The Metallic Armor encased each Ranger in a glittering version of their normal Ranger suits. The enhanced powers were distinctive by the increase in speed each Ranger experienced, with their movements now so fast that they blurred.

In addition to speed, they also found that their strength and durability had improved, with the Tengas unable to hurt or move the Rangers. The White Ranger had the ability to emit a wave of light that repelled the Tengas that surrounded him.

Returning to the Command Center, Tommy and Kat planned to venture to Rita’s moon palace to retrieve the Zeo Crystal. Zordon warned them that their new Metallic Armor would not operate outside of the Earth’s atmosphere. [MMPR3: “Master Vile and the Metallic Armor, Part I“]

Metallic Armor group attack

The Rangers would later utilise their Metallic Armor for protection during the battle against Master Vile’s Globbor monster. As the monster drained power away from the Rangers, Tommy doubted that even their Metallic Armor would be able to protect them for long.

Now left with only a small amount of power left, the Blue Ranger suggested that they use it together to fight Globbor. Bracing themselves, the Rangers performed a group White Light attack that reverted Globbor’s power draining arms back to his normal arms.

Returning to the Command Center, the Rangers each observed that they were now physically weakened following the encounter. Zordon told the Rangers that it would take time for the energy and the Metallic Armor to recharge. [MMPR3: “Master Vile and the Metallic Armor, Part II“]

Breaking the crystal

When the Rangers discovered that the Zeo Crystal and their Zords were being hidden on a planet in the M51 Galaxy, Billy observed that the highly corrosive atmosphere of the planet meant that the Metallic Armor would be unusable during the recovery mission.

When the Rangers returned to Earth with the Zeo Crystal and prepared to shatter it, the Blue Ranger advised that the Rangers utilise the Metallic Armor to protect themselves from the extra energy that could be expelled when the Crystal was broken. [MMPR3: “Master Vile and the Metallic Armor, Part III“]

Master Vile would later send Dischordia to Earth to attack the Rangers. The Rangers used the Metallic Armor to dazzle Dischordia with light and block out her hypnotic song. [MMPR3: “The Sound of Dischordia“]

The Rangers were able to summon the Metallic Armor individually rather than only as a group. When fighting to stop Rito from activating the Orb of Doom, the Rangers appeared to be able to use the Metallic Armor to perform attacks previously only possible when in their Ninja Ranger form. The Yellow Ranger was able to perform a flying flash kick while the Black Ranger was able to slide from one area to another in a moment.

This was the final time that the Metallic Armor was used. [MMPR3: “Rangers in Reverse“]
