The Power Weapons

When the Power Rangers when up against Rita’s menacing Minotaur, they found that they were outmatched even in their Megazord. Observing them through the Viewing Globe, Zordon ordered the Rangers to return to the Command Center.

Confused and concerned, the Rangers asked Zordon to explain what was happening. Zordon informed the Rangers that the Zords had been returned to their hiding places and that they would need new weapons to confront the Minotaur.

Zordon teleported a Power Weapon into the hands of each Ranger. The Black Ranger received the Power Axe, which Zordon described as lightning-quick and hard as diamond. Zordon explain that using the weapons together, the Rangers would be unstoppable.

The Rangers returned to the battlefield and faced the Minotaur. The Power Axe was teleported into the Black Ranger’s hands in a flash of purple light. The Black Ranger was able to use the Power Axe to strike the body of the Minotaur, knocking him backwards.

The Power Blaster

Zordon explained to the Rangers that the Power Weapons could be combined to form a single, powerful weapon. The Power Axe was turned on its side to form the main body of the new weapon called the Power Blaster.

The Axe featured a sliding component on the main handle which moved to lock the Power Bow in place when it connected. The bladed section of the axe featured a trigger that was used to fire the Power Blaster. There was an aperture at the base of the Power Axe handle from which a powerful beam of energy would emit. Cannon Mode

The Black Ranger could use the Power Axe in Cannon Mode even when not assembling the Power Blaster. When in this Cannon Mode, the Axe would shoot purple energy blasts from the barrel of the weapon. [MMPR1: “Itsy Bitsy Spider“] The Black Ranger used the Cannon Mode to attack Rita’s Goatan monster. [MMPR1: “Lions and Blizzards“]

When trapped in the Jellyfish’s time-phased dimension, the Black Ranger was able to use Cannon Mode to attack the monster, freeing the Rangers and weakening the monster’s powers. [MMPR1: “Reign of the Jellyfish“] When the Rangers fought the Slippery Shark, the Black Ranger was able to use Cannon Mode to shoot the monster out of the ground that it was hiding in. [MMPR1: “On Fins and Needles“]

A single strike from the Power Axe was enough to destroy the Putty Patroller who was masquerading as the Black Ranger thanks to the Twin Man monster. [MMPR1: “A Bad Reflection on You“] However, when Rita later used the Badges of Darkness to once again transform a band of Putty Patrollers into evil copies of the Power Rangers, Zordon stated that the Rangers would require new weapons to combat them, including the Power Axe. Designed and built by Alpha 5, these weapons were identical in appearance to the existing Power Weapons, but significantly enhanced in durability. [MMPR1: “Mighty Morphin’ Mutants“]

Modification

In late 1994, the Power Axe appeared to undergo an unexplained modification. The space that had previously existed in the blade to allow it to be used as the Cannon Mode handle was filled, resulting in a solid blade. The Black Ranger attempted to use this modified Power Axe in the fight against Pursehead, but was frozen before he could use it. [MMPR2: “Two For One“]

The Black Ranger would use this version of the Power Axe a short while later in the fight against the second Invenusable Flytrap monster, which disappeared after being hit by the weapon. [MMPR2: “Rangers Back in Time, Part II“]

When trapped in the Spectre Theater, the Power Weapons were unable to be summoned, including the Power Axe. [MMPR2: “The Wedding, Part I“]

This version of the weapon was last used in the fight against the Turkeyjerk monster, where it appeared to have little effect. [MMPR2: “Storybook Rangers, Park II“]

With the Rangers now using the Power of the Zeo Crystal, their Mighty Morphin weapons now adorned the rear wall of the Power Chamber collected in a central display. However, it is unclear if this was the real weapon or merely a replica. [PRZ: “A Zeo Beginning, Part II”]

Axe restored

When Sentinel Knight assembled a team of veteran Rangers to support the Overdrive Rangers, he channeled some of his own energy to restore the powers of the Black Mighty Mighty Power Ranger, including his Power Axe. The restored Power Axe was similar to its first form before it was modified. [PROO: “Once a Ranger, Part I“] The Black Ranger later used the Power Axe in the battle against Thrax. [PROO: “Once a Ranger, Part II“]

The Power Axe was usable through the Black Mighty Morphin Ranger key, which allowed Jake Holling to transform into the Black Ranger. In his Legendary Mode, Jake used the Power Axe in both its Axe and Cannon modes. [PRSM: “Samurai Surprise“]
