The Power Weapons

When the Power Rangers when up against Rita’s menacing Minotaur, they found that they were outmatched even in their Megazord. Observing them through the Viewing Globe, Zordon ordered the Rangers to return to the Command Center.

Confused and concerned, the Rangers asked Zordon to explain what was happening. Zordon informed the Rangers that the Zords had been returned to their hiding places and that they would need new weapons to confront the Minotaur.

Zordon teleported a Power Weapon into the hands of each Ranger.  The mentor explain that using the weapons together, the Rangers would be unstoppable. Armed with new weapons, the Rangers returned to the battlefield to face the Minotaur.

The Power Blaster

As the Rangers attacked the monster, Zordon explained to the Rangers that the Power Weapons could be combined to form a single, powerful weapon.

The Power Axe was turned on its side to form the main body of the new weapon called the Power Blaster. The bladed section of the axe featured a trigger that was used to fire the Power Blaster. The Axe featured a sliding component on the main handle which moved to lock the Power Bow in place when it connected. The Power Daggers and Power Lance would each connect to the underside of the Power Bow. The Power Sword was placed on top of the new weapon.

There were apertures at the end of the Daggers, Lance and Axe from which colored beams of energy would emit. These beams would merge into a single blast that could vaporise monsters.  [MMPR1: “Teamwork“]

The Power Blaster required a degree of precision when aiming. When fired against the Slippery Shark, the Rangers missed their target as the monster was in the process of growing to giant size. [MMPR1: “On Fins and Needles“] The Rangers demonstrated this when they attempted to buy some time by pretending to aim for the hijacked Dinozords, when they were secretly intending to aim for Pirantishead. [MMPR2: “The Mutiny, Part III“]

A powerful combination

The Power Blaster was able to destroy most of Rita’s monsters that it was used against and would often be used to stop monsters before they could grow to giant size.

Pudgy Pig, Madame Woe, Spit Flower, Twin Man, and Pumpkin Rapper were all destroyed and were not made to grow by Rita. [MMPR1: “Food Fight“, “Peace, Love and Woe“, “The Spit Flower“,”A Bad Reflection on You“, “Trick or Treat“]

However, when Rita later used the Badges of Darkness to once again transform a band of Putty Patrollers into evil copies of the Power Rangers, Zordon stated that the Rangers would require new weapons to combat them. Designed and built by Alpha 5, these weapons were identical in appearance to the existing Power Weapons, but significantly enhanced in durability.

The Rangers used these weapons to form the new Power Blaster  against Commander Crayfish and his Mutant Rangers. Not only was the new weapon able to overcome their own Mutant Power Blaster but it also destroyed the Pink and Yellow Mutant Rangers. [MMPR1: “Mighty Morphin’ Mutants“]

Lord Zedd’s Bloom of Doom, Invenusable Flytrap and Beamcaster monsters were also destroyed by the weapon. [MMPR2: “Bloom of Doom“, “Welcome to Venus Island“, “Zedd Waves“]

Ineffectiveness and retirement

While the Power Blaster was formidable, some monsters were able to survive its assault. The Gnarly Gnome was reduced to a pile of rubble, but Rita’s magic wand was able to not only reassemble him but grow him to giant size. [MMPR1: “Different Drum“]

When used against the Eye Guy, the monster collapsed into a pile of his constituent eyeballs, but was able to pull himself back together. [MMPR1: “I, Eye Guy“]

Monsters created by Lord Zedd appeared to have greater levels of survivability against the Power Blaster. Even though Stag Beetle appeared to be defeated, the Power Blaster did not destroy him, leaving him able to grow with one of Lord Zedd’s growth grenades. [MMPR2: “The Beetle Invasion“] Zedd’s Magnetbrain monster was only knocked off his feet, easily surviving the blast from the weapon. [MMPR2: “Two for One“]

Similar to Stag Beetle, the Four Head monster was able to survive the Power Blaster and utilize a growth grenade. [MMPR2: “A Monster of Global Proportions“] This trend continued with the battle against the Cannontop, who once again grew to giant size. [MMPR2: “Scavenger Hunt“]

With the creation of the Power Cannon, the Rangers appeared to rely on the Power Blaster less, only using it one more time after the introduction of the Power Cannon. [MMPR2: “Scavenger Hunt“]
