Hasbro signals plan to bring Power Rangers back to big screen
Before last year’s cinematic reboot, Lionsgate teased that it had very ambitious goals for the Power Rangers movies. Multiple films were a possibility until Power Rangers pulled in less than $150 million worldwide. That seemed to kill any chances of a direct sequel. However, Hasbro recently set in motion a deal with Saban to acquire the entire Power Rangers franchise. And that may be just the spark the Rangers need to get back to the big screen.
Via Heroic Hollywood and Toku Nation, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner shared the company’s vision for the Power Rangers’ future at a strategic conference.
“As I mentioned, we’ve now announced the acquisition of Power Rangers,” said Goldner. “The fact that we can acquire Power Rangers brand and plug and play that right into our strategy where we activate it in entertainment, motion pictures in the future, and then of course across toys and games and consumer products and do so globally. We felt the brand was very underleveraged and undervalued.”
Goldner didn’t offer any additional details about the potential Power Rangers movies. It’s also unclear if Hasbro intends to continue with the current cast or if another reboot would be in order. Though, in this world of reboot culture, the most likely path is a full-on reboot to start fresh.
Hasbro has also been attempting to create a cinematic universe for its action figure franchises, including G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K., Visionaries, and potentially even the Transformers. Once Hasbro closes the deal with Saban, perhaps the Power Rangers could be a part of that universe as well.
