The Power Is Gone

The Power Is Gone

March 7th 2009, and fans tune in to watch the premiere episode of Power Rangers RPM in the USA, perhaps for the last time. News has filtered out of New Zealand that at this moment in time, there are no plans to initiate filming for what would have been the 2010 season of Power Rangers.

The production manager for the show, Sally Campbell, has said that "at this stage we will not be shooting another season". Actor Charlie McDermott, who has done voiceover work for PR for the last three years, said he had not been told about the cancellation.

"It's a bit of a bummer. These big-budget American companies have got millions and they're using our studios. I'd say it would be the actors who lose out the least. It's all the camera guys, the sound, editing suites .. But [the Americans] are used to paying a lot more than they pay us, that's why they come here, their dollar goes a lot further. And they have it down pat. Once you've been here for a while you really refine your processes and make some money."

After sixteen consecutive years, seventeen seasons and two cinema releases, production of Power Rangers will finally cease.

In 2009, Power Rangers RPM will air for 32 episodes, bringing the total episode count of Power Rangers to 700.

Australian Toku in the works: Rescue Force

Australian Toku in the works: Rescue Force

B.O.S. Stunts, the team behind the acrobatics of 2009's upcoming Power Rangers RPM, are currently pitching their own Tokusatsu show to potential investors in Australia.

"We have started this project with a passion. We want to create the first original super hero for Australia, and we are now looking for sponsors for Rescue Force and our specially designed characters with a view to launching as a TV series."

B.O.S. Stunts have already produced a website with a large gallery of pictures focusing the heroes and villains of the series. They have also produced several demo reels showing the characters in action. The producers of Rescue Force would certainly be facing an uphill struggle, as Power Rangers has not been accomdated in Australian TV schedules since the early 90's

"On the FTA TV channels in Australia, there are about 150 children's programs are showing in a week, but there are no live action shows featuring super heroes such as the Power Rangers. This means that Australia still have a potential market for the character business because not only in U.S. but also in many countries in Europe and Asia, as they have produced their own superhero TV programs, adopting ideas from Japan."

B.O.S. Stunts have an experienced track record. They have provided stunt work for Power Rangers since 2005's SPD, as well as Super Sentai since 1999's GoGo V. They also provided stunts for Kamen Rider since 2000's Kuaga series.

Jetix Europe Co-Producing Power Rangers RPM

Power Rangers RPM Jetix Europe Co Production

It's a time of major transition down at Ranger Productions. With rumours of a new Executive Producer and the departure of both Jackie Marchand and Koichi Sakamoto, 2009 is set to be an interesting year behing the scenes of Power Rangers, as this statement from Jetix Europe confirms.

"We have continued to strengthen our programming alliance with The Walt Disney Company. We collaborate closely on our long-term hit property, Power Rangers, and are coproducing its seventeenth season. We also have a new initiative with Disney???s programming team to develop live-action series.

This initiative has been given increased impetus with Disney???s recently announced plans to launch a new channel, Disney XD, in the US. Disney has an impressive track record and we are uniquely placed in being able to access their expertise in this area."

What does this MEAN for the future of Power Rangers? Probably not a lot. Hopefully, it will mean an increase in funding as well as a wider casting pool.

Power Rangers RPM airs March 7th on ABC Kids in the USA.

Operation Overdrive theme tune leaked

Keeping with a tradition that has a history dating back to 1999, the new theme tune for PR's 2007 incarnation, Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, has been leaked on the internet through Jetix's official PROO website. Like last years Mystic Force theme, the new song features pop rap-esque vocals with a techno style music track.

You can download the new Power Rangers Operation Overdrive theme tune here.

The lyrics are as follows:

Go Rangers Go Rangers, GO! GO! GO!
Go Rangers Go Rangers, GO! GO! GO!
Pow-er Ran-gers, Operation Overdrive!
Pow-er Ran-gers, Operation Overdrive!

Watch five fingers reaching for the sky in five ways,
Five heroes walking through the sun for five days,
Dark forces lurking, leaving evil where they roam
Five Rangers lookin for the same five stones!

Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!

There's treasures to be found, there's some lives to be saved,
Our planet to look after, there's a whole lot of space!
Good vs Evil, we got heroes on the scene,
Power Rangers Overdrive is the number one team!

Pow-er Ran-gers, Operation Overdrive!

New animated series in development

Power Rangers Cartoon?

The former musical maestro of Power Rangers, Ron Wasserman, has informed us that he has been made aware of an all new animated Power Rangers cartoon series in development. At the moment, a two-minute promo is being prepared with a view to a full series, but no other information is known. Some fans speculate that this might even be the rumoured "Power Rangers Super Legends", after the mysterious URL that links back to the Jetix homepage. An animated series would certainly be a cost effective measure for Disney, who moved the enitre Power Rangers production to New Zealand in 2002 in order to cut costs. However, even if the new animated venture was to be given the green light, we at the Retrocenter very much doubt that it would be the end of live-action Power Rangers. Whatver happens, we'll keep you posted!

Operation Overdrive premiere date announced

Power Rangers Operation Overdrive

The date of ABC Kids premiere of 2007's PR incarnation, "Power Rangers Operation Overdrive" has been announced as March 3rd. This date is most likely the lastest possible premiere date that can be expected in the US, as it is much more likely that Toon Disney will sitck with PR tradition, and premiere the new show some time in February. If this were indeed the first showing of PROO, then many questions will be raised as to just how many episodes are being produced this year, following PR's all-time low of 32 episodes for Power Rangers Mystic Force.
